Fulop and two Jersey City City Councilwomen are proposing a new city ordinance that would prohibit gas stations from selling fuel to illegally operated dirt bikes and ATVs. The proposal will be introduced at the Municipal Council meeting on Wednesday, April 12.
Since last June, police in Jersey City have responded to 100 calls involving dirt bikes and ATVs, according to the mayor's office.
“We have been working closely with our police department as this issue has become increasingly alarming, and our residents are being put in harm’s way due to reckless ATV drivers,” said Fulop.
A similar law was passed in New York City and is being proposed in Newark, Fulop said. Last September, the Jersey City City Council unanimously passed an ordinance declaring ATVs as contraband and banning motorized vehicles from the street.
Anyone found violating the proposed ordinance faces a maximum fine of $2,000. To view the ordinance, click here.
